A design responding to a brief for a new house to be built at the vacant rear of a large site with two street frontages in the inner city suburb of Princes Hill, Victoria on Wurundjeri Country. The subdivision of the site implied a marked decrease in existing planting and permeable ground area. This existing condition was one the clients viewed as an amenity that benefited themselves and the local environment.
As a result, the design sought to reimburse the site with the potential for ecology through open courtyard spaces and an extensive planted roof. This initial scheme was revised into second iteration of the house as the owners determined that their brief should expand to include a second storey, housing study spaces that could be converted to additional bedrooms.
